Job Title: Livestock Buyer Site Reporting Line: Site Manager
Location: Kepak McIntosh Donald, Portlethen Functional Reporting Line: N/A
Job Purpose: Purchasing of livestock by achieving best price for procurement of suitably graded cattle and sheep to meet weekly production targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Procure suitably graded livestock (beef cattle and sheep)
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with suppliers (including farmers, auctioneers and other third parties)
- Maintain extensive knowledge on reliable suppliers in region
- Understand and maintain knowledge on appropriate pricing levels
- Estimate animal value and negotiate pricing with supplier and in line with agreed business rates
- Continuously seek out opportunities for livestock acquisition
- Provide advice for the proper care of livestock, leading to more successful production
- Develop reports on competitors’ actions, such as buying trends, and inform Procurement team and/or Site Manager
- Inspect livestock on location to ensure good health and animal welfare obligations are met
- Keep current on animal supply and overall market conditions and trends
- Maintain records of all transactions
- Arrange post-purchase transportation of animals to site
Skills/ Experience
- Good understanding of livestock being purchased essential
- Qualification or transferable experience in Agribusiness, marketing, or animal science essential
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and negotiating skills essential
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to follow and forecast future trends
- Capable of making sound business decisions quickly and while under pressure
- Commitment to good practice
- Communicates well in written and oral form with multi-nationals on all levels
- Ability to multitask and work under own initiative to deliver to deadlines
